Five Book To Movie Adaptations I Need To Watch

I'm really not great for keeping up with book to movie adaptations. In fact, most of the time I don't even know about an adaptation until it pops up on my Netflix recommendations. There are a few recent, and not so recent, adaptations on my radar at the moment so I thought I would share them with you. These are five adaptations of books I have previously read. There are so many I could list for books I still haven't gotten around to yet, as I am not great at reading books before their adaptations are released.

I would love to know your thoughts on these book to movie adaptations, so please do let me know if they are worth the watch.

1. All The Bright Places
I read All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven last year and thought it was average. This seems to be a very polarising book, but it was a solid 3 star read for me. It was recently adapted by Netflix and released earlier this year. I initially wasn't sure if I wanted to watch the movie, but I keep seeing it in my Netflix recommendations and now I'm intrigued. I've loved Elle Fanning, who plays Violet, since Daddy Day Care, so that is a pretty big reason for me wanting to give it a go.

2. City Of Bones
This definitely isn't a recent release but it is one I still haven't seen. I have read the first 3 books in the Mortal Instruments series, and really hope to finish the series this year, but have yet to watch any adaptations of the books. I haven't heard the best things about the movie adaptation, but I'm still desperate to watch it.

3. The Perks Of Being A Wallflower
Another older adaptation that I have yet to watch. I read the book back in 2016 and it was another 3 star read for me. Everyone seems to love this book, and the movie adaptation, but I just didn't get the hype. I'm hoping to love the movie more, but I am really unsure about watching it in case I actually like it less than the book. Both book and movie are so well-loved, I feel like I would be letting everyone down by not loving them too.

4. The Girl On The Train
This is another older adaptation of a book I read in 2016 but never got around to watching the movie. I enjoyed this book but didn't love it as much as everyone else seemed to. However, friends that have seen the movie have raved about it. I am really interested in watching this movie now as I remember very little about the plot of the book so might enjoy it more than I would have had I watched it earlier.

5. Stargirl
Lastly, we have a recent adaptation of a book I read and loved as a young teen. I remember reading this multiple times in school, I think it was the book I borrowed from the school library the most, and just falling in love with the story. As soon as I found out it was being adapted for Disney+, I was desperate to watch it. I might have to reread the book first, but I definitely need to give this a watch soon.

Those are five book to movie adaptations that I have not yet seen but want to watch soon. Are any of these adaptations favourites of yours? What do you recommend starting with? Are there any I should give a miss?

My Entire eBook & Audiobook TBR

Last week I shared every book I physically owned, so it seemed only right to also share all of the many ebook and audiobooks I currently own. I have a habit of downloading all of the free ebooks that sound in any way decent and then never getting around to reading them. I'm hoping this might remind me of what I own and encourage me to pick some of them up. I also still have a few audiobooks from Audible that I haven't listened to, despite cancelling my membership over a year ago.

I'm going to attempt to separate these by genre, but there are some that I have had for years and probably don't remember much about them. Mistakes are likely. I'm going to start with ebooks and then I will share the few audiobooks I still have from Audible that I need to get to.

Adding those to my physical unread books takes my TBR total to 252! That is quite an overwhelming number for me so I think I need to get to reading these. It's so easy to buy ebooks or get them free and then completely forget about them.

Which of these should I prioritise in the next few months?

I Recommend 5: Small Town/Beachy Contemporaries

Inspired by Kayla from BooksandLala's 'overly specific' book recommendations series, I thought it would be fun to start a vaguely similar series, in which I recommend 5 books in a random, possibly quite specific category. It seemed like a good idea so I went with it, we'll see how quickly I run out of ideas.

For today's list, I'm bringing Summer to you early. All I have been wanting to read recently are super summer, mostly YA, contemporaries. I want all the light and fluffy summer fun. It seems to be my perfect escape from reality so, as that is something I think we all need right now, I decided to share five of my favourite books in this category. More specifically, five contemporary books set in small beachy tourist towns as this is one of my favourite settings.

This is the book that reminded me just how much I love this setting and gave me the idea for this list. It is a YA contemporary following two best friends as they spend the summer trying to complete a list, in order to help our female MC improve her art, and obviously there's some romantic interest between them. This is so stinking cute and is set by the beach.

So this is cheating a little but I couldn't choose just one. Morgan Matson books are the perfect summer read, and the majority of them are set in a small beachy town. In fact, I believe most of them are set in the same town. If you're looking for a fun summer adventure, involving a summer bucket list, Since You've Been Gone is really great. If you're looking for a beach fun with some more hard-hitting aspects, Second Chance Summer is beautiful but utterly heartbreaking. If you just want some slice-of-life summer fun, The Unexpected Everything is exactly that. I just love her books.

If I remember rightly, this isn't set in a beach town but it is set in a small tourist town that gave me the same kind of feeling. This is a super cute YA romance between a small town girl and a movie star, which all starts with an email being sent to he wrong person. It's been a while since I read this so I don't remember too much, but I do remember it giving me all the small town vibes that I love and a really sweet romance.

This series as a whole isn't my favourite, but I did quite enjoy the first book. This is about a girl who has been going to the same beach house with another family for years and takes place the summer she has really grown up, causing the two boys from the other family to finally notice her. Its full of beachy summer fun, but does have some more serious underlying storylines.

This is the book that made me fall in love with a beach setting. There is nothing light and fluffy about this book, it is heartbreaking. It follows a girl who goes to spend the summer with her father in a small beach town. This is one of the first books I can remember absolutely loving and I still think about it probably ten years later.

If you have any recommendations you could add to this list, please let me know as I would really love to read more books in this kind of setting. I just want to read them all just now! I would also love some ideas for future posts like this, let me know what you would like recommendations for.

What is your favourite setting for a contemporary? Do you love a beach setting?

Sophie :)

My Entire Owned TBR

To try and help myself not buy all of the books this year, I have been trying to focus my attention on the books I already own but haven't yet read. Spoiler: there are a lot of them. I have seen a lot of Booktubers posting videos recently in which they share their entire owned TBR, which seemed to me like a great way to get myself excited about some books I maybe forgot about. Today, I thought I would share with you all of the books I physically own but have not yet gotten around to reading.

The number of unread books I own is starting to get a little overwhelming for me, though I'm aware many people have a lot more than I do. I think the number is sitting around 150 at the moment, but I will also be using this as a way of counting them all so we'll see how close I am at the end. I am going to separate by genre, in the hope that make it seem like less, but I may have some things in the wrong place.

I really am trying to prioritise reading books I own in 2020, instead of buying more, so hopefully I will see the number reduced by the end of the year. I would love to see it under 100, but I think that's a bit optimistic.

Do you see your favourite book on this list? What should I move to the top of my TBR?

Taylor Swift Songs As Books

A few weeks ago I was brainstorming ideas for some different posts to do to try and get me excited about blogging again. One idea I thought of, that I was pretty excited about, was this - matching Taylor Swift songs with books they make me think of. As a huge Taylor Swift fan, and lover of books, the idea of combining two things I really love just seems like the best thing ever.

Within a couple of days of starting to plan this post, I discovered that Gabbyreads has a series of videos on her channel that follow this same idea, so definitely go and check out her videos. I haven't watched any of them before writing this, although I can't wait to go and check them out afterwards, so if there are any similarities in book choices it is unintentional.

Tied Together With A Smile - Beautiful Broken Things by Sara Barnard
This song just reminds me of Suzanne's character from this book. When we're first introduced to her character she appears to be this fun, bubbly girl with a mysterious past, but as the story progresses things begin to unravel.

Love Story - Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston
A forbidden romance involving an actual Prince, what else was I going to choose for this song? Everything about this song just reminds me of this book.

You Belong With Me - Love, Life and the List by Kasie West
The main character in this book, Abby, has been in love with her best friend for forever and it is so clearly obvious as a reader that they completely belong together.

Back To December - Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren
Childhood sweethearts, whose relationship ended badly, have a chance meeting years later and have to make sense of their feelings around what happened between them and their feelings now.

I Knew You Were Trouble - City Of Bones by Cassandra Clare
This song just reminds me of Jace. We all knew Jace was trouble when he walked in.

Style - Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire
This is your typical bad boy and good girl who can't keep away from each other despite not always treating each other the best. It was the first book that popped into my head when I was listening to this song.

I Did Something Bad - Did I Mention I Love You? by Estelle Maskame
I would say falling for your step-sibling is probably the definition of doing something bad. These characters know what their doing is pretty frowned upon but even that can't keep them away from each other.

Soon You'll Get Better - Extraordinary Means by Robyn Schneider
The first book this song made me think of was actually The Fault In Our Stars, but this is a similar story that I actually enjoyed more. A boy is sent to a boarding school for sick teens, makes a great group of friends and meets a girl, who are obviously all also sick.

Lover - You by Caroline Kepnes
I am fully aware that these are so incredibly different. However, the line 'can I go where you go?' just reminds me of Joe. I can't listen to the song the same after making this connection.

The Archer - The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Did anyone not see this coming? The song is in no way similar to the book but I can't see the song title without thinking of Katniss Everdeen.

Those are ten Taylor Swift songs as books, some more closely linked than others. I had so much fun doing this so I can definitely see me doing more of these in the future. Let me know what artists I should do next.

Is there a Taylor Swift song that just reminds you of a certain book?

Best Of What I've Been Watching Recently

I had originally being trying to make what I've been watching recently into a monthly thing but I have gotten to behind on it, and honestly those posts weren't all that interesting, so I thought I would do something a bit different. I haven't shared anything that I have watched so far this year, which is quite a lot given the circumstances, so I thought I would share some of my favourite movies and TV shows I have watched over the past few months.

Frozen 2 - Who didn't love Frozen 2? I enjoyed the first movie but, in my opinion, the second was even better. The soundtrack is amazing, I love the music from this film so much, and the film itself is just as good. I loved the story, they did a really great job of making the sequel just as engaging as the first. It was hilarious and heartwarming all at the same time and something all ages can enjoy.

Cars (1, 2 &3) - Can you tell I got Disney+? I have always loved the first Cars movie so it was one of the first things I watched when Disney+ released in the UK, and I enjoyed it so much that I watched both sequels straight after. The first is just everything that is great about Disney/Pixar movies, it has a beautifully sweet story but is full of fun and laughs for all ages. The second wasn't that great, I will admit, but still fun and I'm sure kids enjoy it. The third one was much better and almost up to the standard of the first. Basically, I'm a big kid and I love these movies.

Miss Americana - I adore Taylor Swift so of course I watched her Netflix documentary as soon as it was available and absolutely loved it. I cried so many times watching it and hearing her talk about some of the struggles she has gone through over the years. She is such an incredible, strong woman and this documentary showcased that brilliantly.

The Good Place Season 4 - I am so sad that this show is over! I watched the whole final season in 2 days and then cried for a solid day after I finished. This season was the perfect ending to a really great, very cleverly written and thought out show and I don't think anything could have been in improved. The characters are some of my favourites ever, and the actors who play them do such an amazing job bringing them to life. I really loved this and can't wait to rewatch the whole thing soon.

Cheer - I started watching this completely on a whim and instantly became obsessed. This is a documentary series following a college cheer team, something I never knew I would even be interested in, let alone get so completely invested in that I couldn't stop watching. This drew me in straight away and I became to invested in this team and the individual cheerleaders, I was completely obsessed. In fact, as soon as I finished it I just wanted to start it all over again.

Station 19 Season 1&2 - As a huge fan of Grey's Anatomy, I have no idea why it took me so long to get around to watching the spin-off series. When this series was introduced in Grey's, I wasn't that interested. However, I decided to give it a go and as soon as I got to know the characters I was hooked. I ended up flying through the first 2 season and completely falling in love with these characters. The storylines haven't been completely keeping my interest, but the really great characters have been making up for that. I definitely don't love it as much as I love Grey's Anatomy, but it is still a solid show.

I've been watching a lot recently but it would appear I haven't been watching a lot of great stuff, as this list was harder than I expected to compile. I am in the middle of a lot of really great shows just now so hopefully I'll have a lot more favourites to share if I continue to do posts like these. I'm always open to TV and movie recommendations, so if you have any you think I would enjoy please share them with me.

What was the best thing you have watched recently?

Sophie :)
